Causes of varicose veins

Varicose veins are to a large extent genetically determined. However, their appearance depends a great deal on the age of the individual.

According to the „Bonn Study“ (Rabe et al., 2003) over 70 % of people in their 20’s have no or minimal signs of venous disease (classified as CEAP C1 or C2). In their 70’s, less than 40% of men and women have no or minimal signs or symptoms.

Factors contributing to the development of varicose veins apart from age are are obesity, lack of exercise and pregnancy in women.
