Sealing with adhesive

In this endovenous procedure, a particularly viscous adhesive is injected into the diseased truncal vein using a catheter.

Sealing veins with adhesive

New adhesives, e.g., Venaseal®, which is chemically related to the well-known “superglue” Cyanoacrylate®, are injected into diseased truncal veins using catheters. As a result, the veins are closed quite reliably and at the same time reduced in size. This procedure can be performed without local anesthesia, provided that the removal of visible branch varices by phlebectomy is avoided. This used to be performed in the same session.

Treatment with Venaseal®

The results are satisfactory in selected patients with less advanced varicose veins. However, a foreign body, so to speak, remains in the tissue with the adhesive. It is not uncommon for phlebitis to occur after treatment.

In the USA, Venaseal® is covered by insurance, but in Switzerland patients have had to pay for it themselves up to now. In contrast, thermal processes have long been established there and have advanced to become the standard treatment. Nevertheless, forward-looking vein specialists will keep their eyes and ears open for further developments – including adhesives.
